Abstract

"…there is a global network of academics, researchers and methodologists who will buy this book or want it in their institute libraries.” Prof. John Harbraken "As the field of human computer interaction grows, this book is likely to be a basic resource.” Prof. Chuck Eastman Design representation is necessary for all design activity. You will gain a guide to both theory and practical application in this discussion of representation as it occurs during the process of design. Goldschmidt and Porter give you perspectives on representational issues in design that are both informative and evocative of further inquiry. The unique interdisciplinary approach brings a new dimension to the study of representation, benefiting the global network of researchers, students and practitioners in all areas of design. Rather than addressing the larger framework directly, a series of smaller case studies are presented, each dealing with aspects of representation in architecture and engineering. Binding together historical-cultural, cognitive-social and technological perspectives eliminates the need for further reading. Innovative research methods based on numerous well-illustrated examples will leave you with new ideas to build on. International contributors focus on worldwide research activities, offering you more than just an expansion of a single viewpoint. Design Representation delves into the common roots of representation in all design disciplines through case studies, historical investigations, theoretical constructs and programming. If you are involved in any design activity, this will be a truly exciting addition to your bookshelf.

Abstract

The computer revolution has made it easy for people with little to no technical training to use a computer for such everyday tasks as typing a letter, saving files, or recording data. But what about more imaginative purposes such as starting your car, opening a door, or tracking the contents of your refrigerator? "Physical Computing" will not only change the way you use your computer, it will change the way you think about your computer?how you view its capabilities, how you interact with it, and how you put it to work for you. It's time to bridge the gap between the physical and the virtual-time to use more than just your fingers to interact with your computer. Step outside of the confines of the basic computer and into the broader world of computing. (Quatrième de couverture)

Abstract

Managing as Designing explores “the design attitude,” a new focus for analysis and decision making for managers that draws on examples of decision making and leadership in architecture, art, and design. Based on a series of conference papers given at the opening of the Peter B. Lewis Building (designed by Frank Gehry) at the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University, the book includes keynote speeches from Frank Gehry and Karl Weick. The book will appeal primarily to scholars of management theory and organization strategy and managers, with many contributions from a variety of academic backgrounds including architecture, sociology, design, history, choreography, strategy, economics, music, and accounting. There is a potential for strong crossover appeal to these groups, especially to those people and groups interested in design and product development. The premise of this book is that managers should act not only as decision makers, but also as designers. Though decision and design are inextricably linked in management action, managers and scholars have too long emphasized the decision face of management over the design face. In a series of essays from a multitude of disciplines, the authors develop a theory of the design attitude in contrast to the more traditionally accepted and practiced decision attitude.

Abstract

An essential tool for those wanting balanced coverage of services and manufacturing operations management. For Operations Management courses at both undergraduate and graduate level. This book is intended to provide an introduction to operations management for all students who wish to understand the nature and activities of operations management. Providing a clear, well-structured and interesting treatment of operations management, the text provides both a logical path through the various operations management activities as well as the fundamental understanding of their strategic context. This book strikes an interesting balance between the strategic and operational views of operations management and between manufacturing and service industry views of operations. Nigel Slack's Operations Management is THE authoritative, managerial view of the subject. The text outlines the importance of operations and demonstrates how crucial it is in creating the products and services upon which we all depend. This revised and fully updated edition of Operations Management continues to provide a clear, well-structured and comprehensive treatment of the subject, balancing a logical approach with the insights that come from real life operations examples and practices around the world.
